Clayton Fettell's Race Report from the Memphis in May Triathalon

From Clayton:

Just a quick update from the weekends racing.

Memphis In May- Memphis in May is a month long, city wide celebration which includes such favoured events as the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, the Beale Street Music Festival and the Sunset Symphony. The mission of the Memphis in May Festival is to unite the city and involve its citizens in a cultural exchange and celebration with an honoured foreign nation. The festival provides a unique opportunity for Memphians to enhance their cultural awareness of foreign lands through exhibits, lectures, sports and the arts. The Triathlon is the highlight of the festivities and is one of the oldest and most prestigious races on the American Circuit.

The race is famous for its staggered start times, we were all sent of at 10 second intervals. I was sent of almost last and immediately made up massive gains in the water. Swimming a 16:11 the pace was on and i felt good. Onto the bike and oblivious to the three guys out in front i thought i was in the lead, i held a good speed and didn't drop under 42kmph. 15 miles in i noticed a guy up the road so i pushed the pace and caught him by the end of the ride.

Onto the run and still feeling strong i was still unaware of the other two guys out in front. Justin told me to go for it as i was down a couple of minutes, unaware of how hard the run actually was i went out hard and made some major ground on the leaders, i got to the turn around and started to work my way back home through the undulating course. With a Mile to go i was really stinging and i asked a fire hydrant how far i had to go, he didnt respond.

I crossed the line and ended up second overall, recording the fastet run split of the day
